Week beginning 20th May 2013

Last week at Squirrels the children planted sunflower seeds in pots.
They will need reminding to water them and place them in the light.  As
they grow they will need to be transplanted in the garden or into a bigger
pot.  We started work on our 3D map of the local area.  The children
are using boxes of various sizes for the buildings and other recyclable
materials for trees, woods, fences, postbox etc.  We will continue
with this after half term and it will be on display for you all to look at
with the children.

We turned our summer house into a
doctors/hospital and the children took on roles as doctors, nurses, patients,
mummys, daddys, receptionist.  We made bandages out of ribbons and
scarves.  Some children asked for wings to use in the garden and they
helped to make and decorate some using sugar paper.  Others went for a
short walk to collect nature items in their buckets ready to make pretend
birds nests.  We used waffle bricks to make tunnels to crawl through and
seats to sit on.  The clay was also very popular as children enjoyed
feeling its texture and moulding it into different shapes.

We have had some visits from the foundation
stage teachers of the local schools.  If your son or daughter is starting
school in September you can help them by encouraging them to be as independent
as possible.  This may include wiping their own noses and bottoms (not at
the same time), washing and drying their own hands, dressing and undressing
themselves, opening food packages such as crisp packets, yoghurt pots,
food containers, plastic bottles (resealing them
afterwards).  They may like to practise carrying a small tray,
balancing items on it, as this will help them when they come
to have school dinners.

Enjoy the 2 week break from Squirrels and
make the most of the time you have with your children.  Read them lots of
stories and make some up!  Give them plenty of paper (big and small), pens,
pencils, chalks and encourage them to do lots of mark making to
help improve their grip and their pencil control.  We look forward to
seeing you all again on Monday 10th June and don’t forget to bring
your child in for Squirrels group photo on Wednesday 12th June at
9.30.
