Week Commencing 1st October 2018

Last week, whilst making vegetable soup, there was lots of interest in all of the vegetables we used.  This week, to extend this theme further, we had vegetables at the craft table for printing with, and boiled potatoes set up in a tuff tray for mashing!  The potatoes offered plenty of opportunity to help develop gross motor skills, as well as opportunities to discuss where potatoes come from and counting as we scooped potatoes from one bowl to the next.  The vegetable printing was fun for a while; then the children decided that the open trays of paint we were using looked very inviting – so they chose to add stampers and rollers too!  We have many of our resources openly accessible to encourage children to access what they need and to promote decision making and choice.

Following on from last week, on Monday we grouped together and made a campfire!  We sat around our campfire, shared hot chocolate and ‘toasted’ our marshmallows.  We followed this up with plenty of campfire songs!

Jolly Jo this week was all about races; running races, beanbag balancing races, and even swimming races!  The children always really enjoy the opportunity to use the large hall and run off some energy.  The new children have done really well joining in with this routine.

Shapes have been popular this week.  This interest was sparked on Monday when Amy introduced various shaped and coloured frames in the garden.  The children were encouraged to come up with their own ideas of how to use these.  Some decided to find matching coloured objects to put in the frames.  Others used the frames as Frisbees and tested which shape went the furthest!  Shapes were then explored indoors too.  We explored a shape matching game and our shape boards.

The climbing frame has been in the garden most of the week, with children having a chance to climb, balance and slide.  We’ll explore some different balancing equipment next week too.

Finally, we’re still feeling inspired by autumn!  The children have enjoyed collecting a variety of acorns, leaves and conkers which we then used at the craft table to make leaf art!

Ideas to continue this week’s fun at home:  Lots of children were interested in shapes this week; why not see what shapes you can see on your journey to pre-school; triangular road signs, rectangular bricks, circular wheels on cars etc. Younger children might simply start to notice similarities in these shapes, whereas older children might be able to recognise and name the shapes.
