​This week we have focussed on a space theme. We have had a whole host of space based activities going on and it has really captured the children’s imagination.

The playdough was turned into moon rock by colouring it an interesting shade of purple. The role play area was made into a rocket and then a planet.

We practised getting ready for our rocket launch by pretending to put on our space suits, heavy moon boot, helmets and gloves. We talked about needing oxygen and strapping ourselves firmly into our seats. We then began the countdown...

10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 and we were off......................................

Activities have included making spaceships and planets with card and silver foil. Aliens in their individual spaceships made from paper plates can be spotted flying around the room and a large rocket was created and made ready to launch.

We have some lovely space books that we have been sharing with the children. These have helped us all to understand how we need oxygen to breathe, why we would need to wear space suits and the difficulties of zero gravity.

Goodness it was windy on Thursday as storm Doris hit the Colchester area. The children had a wonderful time trailing scarves around the garden in the wind until it became too dangerous and we had to come inside. The marble run provided a very welcome distraction from the storm and proved to be very popular.

On Friday the weather was calm once again and it was lovely and mild so we decided it would be a good day to fly to the moon. We created a moon den in the garden and had a group snack inside We looked out for aliens and decided that they would be green and slimy with googly eyes so please let us know if you spot one!

Ideas to continue this week’s fun at home:

Look up into the night sky and talk about the stars and moon.
Practise walking as if on the moon with no gravity - great fun!
