Week Commencing 20th May 2019

30/5/2019

This week we decided to extend the children’s interest in ice cream by providing tubs of our own ‘ice cream,’ made by whisking water and washing up liquid.  The resulting mixture was scooped, spooned, and poured into bowls, with food colouring added and glittery sparkles sprinkled!  Many of the children helped make this mixture, experimenting with an electric whisk and observing as the water turned into a thick bubbly mass!

There was also a lot of interest in trains mid-week.  The children had asked for our waffle bricks in the garden, with a group then turning their bricks into a train!  More children joined in with the play, deciding we were going on journeys to the beach, to Thomas Land, to Disney Land Paris and to the Zoo!  We made our own tickets, practicing our cutting and trying to ‘write’ where we wanted to go.

The craft table was busy with junk modelling this week; enabling the children to create their own structures.  One child decided to build a kite using a cereal box which, although it didn’t fly, it inspired lots of children to want to make their own kites.  Using paper, children decorated their own kites and then used a hole-punch to make a hole for their string.  The kites were taken outside to fly them “high in the sky”

Water play has remained popular, with children exploring the water wall further.  One child observed that the cars they were playing with in the water had “gone to the bottom” – which led to an interesting conversation about floating and sinking… we’ll explore this more after half term!

Gymnastics has been popular all week.  We started by adding the soft mats to the garden after a child asked to show someone his roly-poly.  The soft mats then remained in the garden all week and were used for gymnastics and dancing; including a copy-cat game where children tried to copy what their friend had done before them.

We have continued to explore rhyming this week; sharing the stories ‘Chocolate Moose’ and ‘Oi Frog!’  Many of our children are now building an understanding of how rhyming words sound similar and can come up with their own rhyming words.

Ideas to continue this week’s fun at home: Many of our activities are inspired by observing the children’s play – so this half term, why not simply involve yourself in your child’s play and let them lead their own learning?  Let us know where their imaginations take you...
