Week Commencing 23rd September 2019

This week, for harvest festival, we have been exploring fruit and vegetables at the craft table, using them to mark make with whilst talking about shape, texture, colour and size.  Next, we had fun mashing them in a tuff tray, before then adding the mashers themselves to the paint; making even more interesting patterns!

On Tuesday we created a dinosaur themed height chart – ‘Measure-a-saurus.’  Many of the children, having been involved in making the height chart, were eager to be measured!
In doing this we have had the opportunity to observe lots of lovely maths related language such as tallest and shortest.  We also observed children then measuring each other against trees in the garden.

The children were inspired to go on a bear hunt, which then changed to a bug hunt!  Having searched the garden for bugs, magnifying glasses in hand, children then decided they needed to make their own maps to help find the bugs – so we created maps that showed where the best bugs were to be found!

The train track has been particularly popular this week.  The children helped build a large track and then focused on driving their trains around the track. We observed some lovely positional language with children driving their trains ‘over’ the bridge and ‘under’ the tunnel.

The weather has been somewhat changeable this week, so, on Tuesday, we decided to bring the outside in and set up a tent and campfire indoors!  The children all sat around the campfire as we listened to a story, and then we had our morning snack around the fire!  This led to lots of children talking about their own camping and holiday experiences.

We decided to make ‘large art’ this week; we rolled out large rolls of wallpaper and drew around the children.  The children then decided who they would make themselves into - train drivers, superheroes and firefighters!

Ideas to continue the learning at home

Why not explore the fruit and veg in your local supermarket? You could discuss the different sizes, colours, and textures.
