On Tuesday unfortunately, the planned visit to Highwoods school to partake in sports was cancelled. We did however enjoy our usual sporting activities with Jolly Jo in the hall, and the rest of the morning was spent in the garden playing with water, sand and mud. Lovely.
There was a lovely surprise for the children on Thursday morning when a group of young people who were taking part in the National citizen service (NCS) arrived to entertain the children. The children were divided into four groups and took part in dance, music, art and story telling workshops. Everyone had a wonderful time and the staff, children and young visitors all benefited from joining in the activities together. We all learned a great deal from each other.
This is such a busy time of year as many of our children are preparing for beginning school in September. There is a good deal of coming and going as the children have appointments to visit their schools and the teachers come in to Squirrels to meet them in their pre-school environment. All these opportunities really help with the transition into school and help to ensure that the children have no worries about “big school”.
On Friday we took delivery of a large outdoor dolls house which was kindly donated by a school having a clear out. The children spent a very happy morning scrubbing and cleaning it with soapy water whilst they discussed who should live in it. The general consensus was that the dinosaurs would like to live there, so we will see who else moves in next week.
Words we have learned this week:
Huge (part of a group discussion to describe the new dolls house)
Release (the butterflies)
Ideas to continue this week's fun at home:
Try looking for butterflies and see how many you can spot. Create a tally chart to keep track of how many you see. (This helps children to understand the link between writing something down you want to remember or record, and gives meaning to words)
