We've also had fun finding out about Chinese New Year this week. We watched a short CBeebies video about how this festival is celebrated, and then had-a-go at various crafts relating to this. We made Chinese inspired drums, fans, dragon masks and lanterns! The children also helped us to make a large dragon mural for the wall, inspired by photographs of the Chinese dragons often seen during the New Year celebrations. At carpet-time we shared a story about a lucky panda, and then used our large map to look at where pandas live in China. Finally, we transformed our shop into a Chinese restaurant, complete with rice and noodles on the menu to explore!
We've also explored Valentines this week. We shared two stories at carpet-time, 'World's Greatest Dad,' and 'I love My Mummy' - both about those we love. This sparked a lively conversation about who we love and why, with children talking about what their parents do for them, such as 'giving cuddles' and 'reading stories.' We explored valentines printing at the craft table, using toilet roll tubes folded into heart shapes, as well as baking our own heart-shaped biscuits for snack.
The children have continued to be inspired by the doctors' role play this week, We practiced peeling plasters and applying bandages to our poorly and injured dolls on Friday, as well as looking through first aid books and performing first aid on our friends!
Other popular activities this week have included ring games, such as 'Please Mr. Crocodile' and the 'Honey Pot' game, construction with the octoplay and marble run, making our own playdough, and making snowflakes.
Ideas to continue the learning at home:
