Week Commencing 9th September 2019

Welcome to our first blog of the new academic year, and what an amazing week it's been!  We have been thrilled to welcome back our returning children who are starting their second year with us - they seem to have grown and matured immensely over the 7 week break!  We have also enjoyed meeting our new children and have been amazed at how quickly they have settled!  Many of the children who start with us have never been away from a parent, so for them to already be engaging with their environment, exploring the activities, and being willing to have-a-go, is fantastic!

Our ethos celebrates the value of child-led play; observing and supporting play ideas that the children have initiated.  This week the children have especially enjoyed role-play, both in the indoor kitchen area, and the outside mud kitchen, serving up mud pizzas and mud cupcakes!

Many of the children have enjoyed exploring the paint this week, using paint brushes, stampers and hands to create their artwork.  We’ve also observed many of the children choose to engage in 3d art; painting cars and animals… we’ll explore ideas that extend this further next week.

Amy shared the story ‘Monkey Needs to Listen’, where monkey makes a go-kart ready for a race.  This inspired a group of children to paint a box that they could use as their ‘go-
kart’.  Once made, we tied a scarf to the box and children took turns to be pulled around
the garden.

Our focus story has been 'Owl Babies' - a story where baby owls, Sarah and Percy and Bill anxiously await the return of their Mummy - a lovely tale that helps children understand that a parent (or grandparent) will always come back for them.

Other popular activities this week have been the sand tray, bikes in the garden, small world cars and trains, using our kiddy-camera, and collecting autumnal finds in the garden.

Ideas to continue the learning at home:

Talk to your child about their first week experiences, what stories did they listen to, what toys did they like, and did they play inside or out?
